A Winter Wonderland in Mendon Ponds Park
January 2015
Sick of all this snow? Plan a visit to nearby Mendon Ponds Park, and you may find yourself hoping it never melts! Located just six miles from Erie Station Village Apartments, Mendon Ponds is well worth a visit at any time of year; but winter is when the park really comes alive. If you love cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, you’re in luck: the Park boasts over 20 miles of groomed trails that range from short and easy to challenging and hilly. If you feel like reliving your childhood, there are two hills that are great for sledding (located across from the Cavalry House Lodge on Douglas Road, and next to the East and West Lodges on Canfield Road). While at the Park, be sure to stop by Wild Wings, a non-profit organization that rehabilitates birds of prey – you can visit between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm every day except Wednesdays and Thursdays.
A fun hint: take some sunflower seeds with you when you visit. While on a quiet part of a trail, hold the seeds out in your hand – and a bird may just come eat right out of it!
