Community Alert: Hazardous Materials Collection
September 2015
Finally – an answer about what to do with that trash. The kind that you throw in the bin and then feel some kind of way about, so you take it back out. And then it just sits in your kitchen or your car. The longer you stay in your apartment, the more that stuff accumulates. You definitely don’t want to keep it, but you know it can do damage if it ends up in the wrong place.
Some materials are hazardous. What are you supposed to do with them?
There are plenty of household items you shouldn’t put it in the trash, on the curb, or in your blue bin. That’s where Hazardous Materials Collection comes in. Anything containing chemicals should get an extra moment of consideration. The first step to safely disposing of batteries, aerosol cans, and CFL bulbs is to make sure they’re accepted.
- Check the list. Make sure the right items are headed to the right place.
- Make an appointment. You can call 585-753-7600 on any weekday between 8 am and 4 pm or use the convenient online scheduler.
- Package your trash safely. You won’t be the last person to handle this stuff.
- Drop off your stuff. The local hazardous materials collection facility is on Avion Drive, off of Paul Road behind the airport.
You can drop off 30 gallons of liquid or 75 pounds of solid household waste per appointment. If you have more, there will likely be a fee. Mention this when you make your appointment. Also, leave small children, pets, and cigarettes at home. All three can make hazardous waste a lot more hazardous.
