The building of the ice palace is under way!

What better place in the Eastern United States to celebrate winter than Upstate New York? Every year since way back in 1897, the joys of ice, snow, and hibernation have been celebrated on the shores of Lake Flower in Saranac Lake, NY. Depending on the whims of nature, weather, and history, the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival has often centered around a spectacular ice castle or palace. This year is no exception, and construction of the structure began on January 27th.

A Celebration of Snow Sports

You’d be hard pressed to find a larger or more diverse array of winter sports accessible to the general public. The winter carnival includes snowshoeing, cross-country and alpine skiing, inner-tube races, skating races, and hockey games. Arguably even better (and definitely more unusual) are the non-traditional sports – snowflake volleyball, snowshoe softball, and exhibitions of curling and woodsmen’s logging skills. And, ladies, don’t forget to register for Taylor Rental’s Fry-Pan Toss at Riverside Park.

Food, Music, Comedy & Contests

Less strenuous highlights include the Coronation of Winter Carnival Royalty Ceremony, to be held this year on February 3rd and the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Gala Parade on Saturday, February 11th. The theme of this year’s carnival is Adirondack Wildlife, which is sure to lead to some wild and crazy fun for all ages. There will be fireworks, a cookie decorating contest, live music, and “The World’s Funniest Ice Fishing Musical Comedy.” And don’t leave the kids at home, because there’s been a concerted effort in recent years to make the carnival even more fun and exciting for younger visitors.
