August 2016

Take a drive to Spencerport.

If you put in a lot of miles biking the Erie Canal, you might be familiar with Spencerport. Otherwise, it’s likely that you’re unfamiliar with this village West of Rochester. When the canal was built, it passed right through the farm of Mr. David Spencer. He sold the farm, and the land was made into the first lots in the village first known as Spencer’s Basin. Today the suburb has a population of about 3,600 living in an area covering 1.4 square miles. The second weekend of August, Spencerport is the place to be for a fine dose of authentic German culture.

The 112th Annual German Festival

There will be fun for the whole family Friday, August 12th (4 to 11 pm) and Saturday August 13th (noon-11 pm). Admission is just $5 for adults and free for kids under 16 (with the purchase of an adult ticket). Live music will feature local bands The Frankfurters, Die Lustigen Almdudler, and Die Auslanders. Visitors will find authentic homemade German food and an abundance of beer. If it happens to rain, festivities will continue under the tent. A traditional German mass will be held at St. John The Evangelist Church (55 Martha Street) at 3 pm on Saturday, August 13.

The Federation of German American Societies

The German Festival, previously called “der Deutscher” Tag and held in various locations throughout the city, is produced by the Rochester-based Federation of German American Societies. The organization promotes and preserves music, arts, sportsmanship, and other aspects of German Culture in the United States.
