Area Activity Guide: Pro Sports in Winter
January 2017
There’s More to Upstate NY Sports
It’s no secret that Upstate New York is a hotbed of winter sports. We’re living in a wonderland of cross-country and downhill skiing, golf course sledding, hiking, and snowshoeing. What you may not realize, though, is how many opportunities there are to stay warm (well, that part varies) and see the pros in action. The most exciting sports-centric road-trip options include Syracuse Basketball, Buffalo Bills NFL games, and Sabres match-ups. But on weeknights and those weekends you feel like staying close to home, there’s still plenty of athletic action for sports spectators to enjoy.
Amerks
The Rochester Americans (Amerks for short), play action-packed AHL hockey at Rochester’s BlueCross Arena and KeyBank Center. Having cemented a hockey legacy in our city, the Amerks are the fourth-oldest franchise in the AHL and celebrated their 60th anniversary last season. The patriotic team wearing red, white, and blue is an affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres. Tickets to individual games start at just $12, so bring the whole family!
Knighthawks
If you love sports but have never witnessed indoor lacrosse, put it a Nighthawks game on your bucket list. The Rochester Nighthawks have been a professional lacrosse team in the National Lacrosse League since it began in 1998. They play at Blue Cross Arena, the smallest arena in the NLL, in its smallest market! This stellar local team holds a league record for reaching the playoffs in 13 consecutive seasons. A Nighthawks game is an affordable way to get an adrenaline rush, with individual game tickets starting at just $10 and season tickets available for under $100.
Razorsharks
Basketball in Rochester? Yep! The RazorSharks compete in the Premier Basketball League, the AAA-level league of professional basketball. Like the city’s other pro leagues, the 7-time world champion RazorSharks play at Blue Cross Arena. With $5 general admission and $10 reserved seating, it’s one of the most accessible sports experiences in Rochester!
