Area Activity Guide: M.C. Escher at the MAG

Optical illusion of a staircase

December 2016

Recognize this Image?

If you do, it’s not because you’ve seen it before, but rather because the iconic works of M.C. Escher are as unforgettable as they are famous. Escher’s actual creations are copyright protected, and we knew something Escher-esque would be enough to draw fans to this post so that we can share a local opportunity to see the REAL works of M.C. Escher up close.

Reality & Illusion

The M.C. Escher: Reality and Illusion exhibition at Rochester’s Memorial Art Gallery couldn’t be more perfectly timed. Local family members and out-of-town guests of all ages will equally enjoy the fascinating reality-flipping and perspective-challenging impact of these works.

According to the museum…

“The exhibition of over 100 woodcuts, lithographs, and drawings takes us deeper into both the literal and impossible worlds he created over a career that spanned five decades.”

It’s an opportunity to see not just hands drawing themselves and stairs that go up and down simultaneously, but also some of the artist’s lesser-known pieces. Those looking for a deeper dive into Escher’s surreal world can sign up for a guided tour, attend a symposium on February 25th, or explore a series of classes at the MAG’s Creative Workshop.
