Area Activity Guide: Journey to the Son: A Celebration of Son House Festival at GEVA
August 2015
We love highlighting the many wonderful aspects of Rochester, both past and present. That’s why we so often post about historical events and people. And when you live in the Festival City as we do, we can’t help but post about the innumerable multi-day events and fests that have given the city that moniker. So, how perfect is the upcoming Son House Festival here in town, celebrating the legendary bluesman? Oh, we also like music a lot.
GEVA will be sponsoring and, along with a number of surrounding venues, hosting many of the festival events, which will begin on August 26th and run through August 29th. In case you aren’t familiar with Son House, he was a legendary bluesman who lived for many, many years in the Corn Hill neighborhood. So, yet another historical figure who called Rochester home! In fact, our city’s significance to him is being officially recognized with the dedication of an official Mississippi Blues Trail marker on that Friday. We’re the first place in the entire state to be given this honor, and the festival is built around it! The festival will feature films, visual arts, storytelling, theatre, and more. Oh, and of course there will be music aplenty! Tickets and much more information can be found here. The festival is only 20 minutes from Erie Station Village, so if you’re a music and/or history fan, check it out!
