Area Activity Guide: Family-Friendly New Year’s Eve

Christmas ornament and text: Happy New Year!

December 2016

The turn of the year is a time for renewal, reflection, and celebration. Whether you’ll be ringing in the new year on your own or getting together with friends and family, it’s a wonderful chance to also celebrate the wonderful communities we belong to. If you’d like to join together with members of all ages from the Rochester community, the night of December 31st offers a few engaging opportunities.

First Night Rochester

Looking for a lovely and potentially less chaotic night of fun and memories? Avoid the hustle and bustle of downtown by attending First Night Rochester at Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex, an annual New Year’s Eve party focused on providing families a memorable and safe opportunity to celebrate the New Year. With 170,000 square feet of event space, there is something for everyone, including fun activities, dining, and even a fireside lounge to enjoy some quiet time with your loved ones. Explore three ice skating rinks, entertainment by Flyin’ Brian and Miss Understood of Party Productions, giveaways, music, and much more!

Free City of Rochester NYE Events

Want to celebrate at the heart of the action? Head downtown for a flurry of free family-friendly events courtesy of the City of Rochester. Kicking off first is free ice skating at the ice rink at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park. Beal’s Rock & Roll Review will be performing to put a little swing in your step…er…skate. Kids can skate from 5 to 7, but it’s adults-only (ages 16+) after that.

When it’s time to warm up your fingers and toes, join the party at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center. From 7 to 10 pm, you’ll find an amazing array of activities for all ages. There will be a DJ Dance Party, bounce houses, airbrush tattoos, photo booths, caricature artists, a magician, and more! If case anyone is getting hangry, snacks and beverages will be available for purchase!

At 10 pm, turn your gaze outside or grab a great spot on the Main Street Bridge to catch the downtown Fireworks Display.

You can park for free from 6 to 11 pm at the following garages:

  • South Ave. Garage, 39 Stone St.
  • Washington Square Garage, 111 Woodbury Blvd.
  • Sister Cities Garage, 28 N. Fitzhugh St.
