Area Activity Guide: Erie Canal

Spring will (hopefully) soon be upon us, so it’s time to start thinking about exploring some local landmarks!  The legendary Erie Canal was completed in 1852, and helped open up Western New York to the rest of the country and arguably, the rest of the world.  It created a viable connection between the Atlantic and the Great Lakes that ran right through the then-blossoming city of Rochester, NY.  Although the canal no longer runs through the heart of downtown, it is still a large area draw, thanks in no small part to the incredible local effort in creating a multitude of attractions surrounding our own section of the great Erie Canal.

For example, we highly encourage you to take the drive up to Schoen Place, and its adjacent neighbor Northfield Commons, in Pittsford.  It’s less than a 20 minute jaunt, and is a lovely way to spend an afternoon.  The areas include numerous restaurants and retail stores and the locale right on the canal makes it the perfect spot to get some shopping done and then grab a bite or two to eat.  The restaurants include Aladdin’s Natural Eatery, Simply Crepes, The Village Coal Tower, and Lock 32 Brewing Company.  The shops are numerous, and more information can be found at Northfield Commons’ website.  It’s a truly charming experience located right in the middle of local history – be sure to check it out!
