Area Activity Guide: Collecting Shadows – The Legacy of James Card
August 2015
The city of Rochester has a rich history, along with a number of Rochesterians who made a great impact on not only our community, but the nation as a whole. One of these was George Eastman, who we’ve memorialized and celebrate with the George Eastman House, which is only 20 minutes from Erie Station Village. The Eastman House is a stunning museum dedicated to the art of film, both photography and motion pictures. The very first curator of the museum’s motion picture collection was James Card. 2015 marks Card’s 100th birthday, and to celebrate it, the Eastman House is hosting a new exhibition!
Card was the driving force behind the establishment of the Eastman House’s vast collection of moving pictures, and subsequently became one of the most important figures in film preservation around the globe. Running through October, this exhibit will explore his love of film through various media, as well as his own writings on the subject. The Dryden Theatre will also be showing a series of films that were important and influential to card. Please see the Eastman House’s webpage for the exhibition to get more information. Make sure you visit the Eastman House soon to enjoy this enlightening birthday party!
