Area Activity Guide: Shakespeare’s Macbeth by WallByrd Theater

July 2017

Local Theater with a Modern Twist

Productions of Shakespeare by the WallByrd Theater Company aren’t for the faint of heart. This Rochester-based company works with actors from the local community to reinvent classic stories. Thanks to their immersive, world-building approach, City Newspaper calls WallByrd’s productions “Shakespeare for the next generation.” If the currently running post-apocalyptic take on Macbeth is any indication, we can expect WallByrd to push the boundaries of local theater for many years to come.

An Intense Audience Experience

WallByrd’s Macbeth displays both knowledge and moxie by taking a Mad Max-inspired angle in its dark, combat-heavy interpretation. This troupe definitely isn’t cutting corners, so don’t show up tired, as the whole affair runs almost three hours (including one intermission). From the sets to the choreography to the casting, everything has been carefully considered for its power to draw in audiences and hold them rapt. You can see the production July 14th through 29th at the Lyric Theatre with a $20 advance ticket, or secure a seat the day of the show with a flexible pay-what-you-can option.
